If they like platformers, I'd recommend the original Donkey Kong Country for SNES. If they prefer something deeper and with a story, then Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, also for SNES.

Time Pilot '84 by Konami (MAME). Fantastic, unrelenting shooter, good difficulty curve, looks and sounds great.
