this doesn’t feel materially *that* different - only a year separates this and the previous platter - but this seems more polished all the same. the drummer’s doing interesting things under the hood here. folk-tinged stuff ain’t always my jam but this works for me, definitely an autumn sound.

these guys have been on my list to check out for a while - mellower than expected, defined by the tension between breathy singer-songwriter vocals and a grungy chassis. sometimes the tension collapses, sometimes it gallops down the road a bit. I’m interested to see where they go with this template.

now that the Ultimate books are ending I’ll have no excuse not to sit down and actually read the stack through on this remarkable achievement. there’s a chance this could be remembered as the most influential series of this era. it’s already one of the best looking Marvel books in history. respect.

shame DC’s going to have that nasty asterisk on the record for a long while. Erica Henderson has clearly been percolating on this book for a while and deserves her laurels despite. she’s stepping up on a big stage with a chunkier line and riotous colors. she’s gone Francavilla (complimentary).

and then there’s this thing … no clue what’s actually happening here but this is more of James Stokoe’s ongoing fantasy pastiche … built atop a pile of manga, laying all the influence bare with meticulous detail. story seems really involved, this can really only be a labor of love from Stokoe.

there’s no point in denying the book of the week - the month - the year? - is Savage Sword of Conan #11, a tour de force from Liam Sharp’s pen … his digital stuff is excellent but this is an abject lesson in the fact that nothing in art can beat the tactile splendor of paper covered in hatching.
