It’s remarkable just how cinematic the cinematography is in TNG’s first season. There’s so much use of light and shadow in almost a painterly way that’s completely gone in the latter seasons. It feels like a proper extension of the cinematography in the first two seasons of TOS.

New York Times, June 26, 1980. Many of the contemporary articles about the release of the second Star Wars movie point out that its opening weekend grosses didn't quite top the first Star Trek movie.

In comparing TNG's pilot and finale, it's impossible to call Farpoint anything but cinematic while AGT is very clearly a TV production. The most obvious difference is the 21st C courtroom which is dynamic and grimy in Farpoint and clean and flatly lit in AGT. Though, we kind of dig Q's new throne.

This is one of my favorite scenes in STAR TREK. I loved when both Kirk and Spock were in opposition about what to do next. What I also love about this is that Kirk comes to realize Spock was right. Yet, at the end, Spock also admits that he felt for his fallen crewmates.

Good discussion in this ep about the myth of Star Trek Exceptionalism, the notion that the franchise was the first to do many things--in this case, to have two pilots, which it wasn't. A lot of the hype about TMP in 1979 was that it was the first TV show to be turned into a movie, which it wasn't.
