Here's something I noticed on my rewatch of "Shuttle to Kenfori". The Klingon transmission ↖️ uses and old fan made alphabet created by Geoffrey Mandel for the "U.S.S. Enterprise Officer's Manual" published in 1980 ↗️ instead of "pIqaD"↙️ which has been the official Klingon alphabet since TMP.↘️

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier premiered 36 years ago today with a plot so exciting they had to put seatbelts in the theater. It’s also the only movie in the franchise with no clear theme. Listen to our review where we try to figure out what the mountain means.

Let’s say your robot says “you can’t unscramble eggs” and “a good offense is the best defense”. Would you then understand he wants you to use the Cygnus’s probe ship to escape now that your own ship has been destroyed? We feel like we’d die trying to figure it out.

Anthony Perkins’ performance in The Black Hole is extremely unsettling. He’s nervous throughout, especially when he meets Reinhardt. The chemistry between the two is unmissable. Perkins downright falls in love and mostly seems worried others will notice. Here’s a thread of his best horny faces:

Most of the time the Palomino's holographic display was done in camera. In the first pic you can see the projection hitting Earnest Borgnine's arm and casting a shadow ↙️. In the second pic it's clear the effect was composited in during post and a matte was cut around Joseph Bottom's body↘️.

This kind of depth of field without a split diopter? Robert Wise, eat your heart out.

Robert McCall, who painted the famous 2001: A Space Odyssey poster, was initially the art director for The Black Hole. His Cygnus design is the basis of the final design. He was replaced 6 weeks in with Peter Ellenshaw. But he wasn’t mad. Please don’t put in the magazine that he got mad.

Joseph Bottoms, who played Charlie Pizer in the Black Hole, won a “New Star of the Year” Golden Globe for the miniseries “The Dove”. But according to google image search he’s most famous for a photo spread he did for the New York entertainment magazine “After Dark”. Happy Friday!

Although much of The Black Hole was shot on blue screen, many of it's outer space footage was not. To avoid matte lines on the complex ships they were filmed them in front of an enormous hand-painted backdrop with thousands of backlit holes punched in it for the stars.

It's curious to see how various print versions of The Black Hole handled its weirder scenes. Anthony Perkin's evisceration is so graphic ↖️ no one adapts it accurately. In all cases he's lasered – by Reinhardt in the Whitman comic ↗️, and by Maximilian in the Kirby strip ↙️ and Alan Dean Foster novel ↘️

The Black Hole was the very first science fiction I encountered as a kid through the Disney record book. I didn't see the movie itself until years later. Perkins and Borgnine's characters were a shock because they're airbrushed out the the book's pics, probably because of their violent deaths.
