The reviewer wasn't wrong. An Outer Limits-esque "bear" (monster) was the wrong move for the show's premiere.

All true! I'll add that despite the fan myth that Paramount didn't know the show's worth until after it was syndicated, the Mountain ran this full-page advert touting the show as a global hit in the March 24, 1969 Broadcasting, 10 weeks before NBC broadcast "Turnabout Intruder" on June 3, 1969.

It's not Trek but it's neat. A concept for the space freighter in Silent Running by Don Moore. Such images were used to help sell the project to Universal. It has a bit of the feel of the Cygnus in The Black Hole.

Most folks think "Wagon Train to the Stars" meant "Western in Space." But that's not the case. Roddenberry was saying #StarTrek would do for science fiction what Train did for westerns with the comparison. At the time, Train was a prestige hour-long drama.

"But don't you understand? We've got to destroy it!" 58 years ago, Star Trek's "The Doomsday Machine" was before the camera.
