Gene stopped every TNG script from becoming a TOS sequel. If you thought Naked Now was lame, imagine every episode like that. He made the show stand completely on its own. He also nixed a number of bad ideas in TSFS, TVH, TFF, and TUC. His notes were really on point.

We’ve been praising Tatiana Maslany on @shipfullofjerks.bsky.social quite a bit lately. Just saw the first ep of her new show “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed”. I don’t know where it’s going to go, but she’s completely amazing in it as usual.

This reminds me of the many times I’ve had to tell people most European painters since the 16th C used a camera obscura to project subjects onto their canvas that they traced so thoroughly you can see the lens artifacts.

My initial calcs put the Tholian spinner at 95 feet long. That's about the length of the teardrop on the Enterprise. But it may be even smaller than that. When setting up the same shot that's in Tholian Web I had to put one spinner almost on the Enterprise hull. The other is a sane distance away.

The reason why I’ve never been too impressed with The Devil Wears Prada is because by the time it came out Absolutely Fabulous had been on for, what, 14 years already? Lwaxanna Troi is my example of what a broad audience TNG was going after from its very start. She got my mother to watch Star Trek and this was her favorite episode in particular. This is also the character that took Majel Barret from mediocre to great actor. She is spectacular in this.

SNW really peddles in 19th century hokum like no other show out there: eugenics, genetic determinism, innate intelligence, ley lines. They even (purposefully?) misdefined epigenetics as “human instinct”. At some point you have to call this an ideology. It’s not just bad science. It’s anti-science.

Gene Roddenberry, after TOS, spelled out how we’d get to the Star Trek future with Genesis II. A nuclear war would wipe the slate clean and a bunch of nonbinary NASA nerds would put everything back together again.

I went to actual art school in the 90s and had a few peers that would smoke. The vast majority of us hated them, especially when we had to put up with them in common areas and stairwells. At one point some one suggested carrying a water bottle around to spritz them with.

Thought I'd try replicating the TOS engine dome effect with just 3D objects and no textures. The outer dome is a transparent material with a blurriness tag. The bulbs have a luminance tag. I included some reflective broken mirror bits as well.

@bryanmurphy.bsky.social surprised me in a good way by saying Maurice Hurley is the villain of "Chaos on the Bridge". The usual go to is Leonard Maizlish who I think is the scapegoat for Gene's kinks. Nothing Maizlish is blamed for is incompatible with what Gene was doing and saying in the 1970's.

It’s terribly ironic that ”Experimenter” lambasts “The Tenth Level” for making the Milgram character a gentile while casting a gentile as Milgram himself. But it’s even funnier that it calls “Tenth”, which is a well crafted drama, a bad movie while it is itself a heavy handed exposition machine.
