Indeed, that is a no-go for the EU. Most British still think the EU is only about trade. As long as that perception remains, the British population will always be disappointed.

…Brexit was delivered. Britain got what it demanded: sovereignty, borders, external status and reduced integration. The issue is not that Brexit failed to happen. The issue is that too many people are only now discovering what Brexit actually meant in practice.

It is actually rather insulting to suggest that the UK is so infantile that it cannot take responsibility for the consequences of its decision, or that the rest of the world ought to change its ways of operating to avoid hurting the UK's feelings. The UK must operate in the real world.

What’s striking about the UK Brexit debate isn’t just that it’s wrong, it’s that people often know it’s wrong but say it anyway. Claims get debunked, conceded, then recycled because they’re useful. That’s not confusion. It’s a habit of dishonesty that passes for debate.

Our rights? We voted them away. That's what happened. We're not EU citizens anymore because we voted our citizenship away. It's entirely a British decision. Trying to foist the blame onto the EU just isn't constructive or helpful.

Get a grip. Anyone is "at the whim of the EU” is a really offensive way to frame it. Brexit is a UK choice. After that, the EU27 applying our laws isn’t “doing what we like”, it’s the predictable consequence of the UK opting out of shared rights and rule-making.

Where is the evidence that "Spain" wanted any such thing? As opposed to the Spanish equivalent of the mayor of Torbay? The current Schengen arrangements work absolutely fine for British tourists, who are courted by the Spanish tourist board and warmly welcomed every year in their millions.

Its not the attachment to their place in the sun that is wrong, it is the interminable daily/weekly whingeing that the EU will not fix their third country personal wish-lists that is *very* wrong. And hugely tiresome in its incessant repetitiveness. Yet you contrive to have sympathy for them....

I was British with Spanish residency when it happened and I didn't have to do anything. I filled in a form to allow me to vote in local elections again, and swapped my residency certificate for a TIE as I wanted an ID card. Drivers Licence, healthcare etc were all sorted, when they should have been.

Two: despite having left the EU the UK should be able to do the same business in the same way as when it was a member and arrangements must be made to enable this. This is just a refusal to accept the reality that non-members are not entitled to, and will not get, the same privileges as members.

Well tbf the minute I heard ‘citizen of nowhere’ I knew the game was up and UK citizens were going to be left high and dry by their own govt. Still doesn’t change the fact that they had years to sort out their status and they wouldn’t be able to have it both ways.

Yup. There's a huge difference between being angry about losing your rights as a result of the UK's choice (perfectly reasonable, helps energise rejoin) and being angry at the EU and searching for a magic cheat code that will force them to unilaterally restore those rights (utter batshit, dickish)
