Indeed. Even the language around people doesn’t change: for example the youth mobility scheme is seen only thru the prism of “how many do we allow in” and “how much it will cost our universities“. When in fact it will be reciprocal and the EU’s aim is mainly cultural, not economic.

No trick. EU free movement exists because 27 countries share the same rules, courts and obligations. What’s called “radical” is wanting the benefits back while refusing the common rules that make them possible.

In Michel Barnier’s own words: - “The SM is much more than a free trade zone. It is an ecosystem, with common laws, common standards for the environment, rights for workers and consumers, common regulations, common supervisions, and on the top of this, a common jurisdiction: the Court of Justice.”

That is for the birds. The Single Market isn’t a buffet. It’s the x4 INDIVISIBLE freedoms codified in shared laws, enforced by shared courts that protect shared rights including free movement. Thinking the EU would dismantle its own legal order so the UK can cherry-pick again is pure fantasy.

I think it’s more systemic than that. The past few days dialogue with you highlights a persistent contempt for EU rules and regulations: a reflex assumption that the uk should be exempt from them. You won’t rebuild trust, or free movement, while arguing you deserve special treatment.

The answer is simpler than the theory: many (read: the English) assumed freedom of movement was an export, not a reciprocal contract. Mobility for “us” abroad felt natural; mobility for “them” at home felt optional. Brexit merely made that asymmetry visible and then real.

It IS a normal right inside a system the uk chose to leave. Free movement wasn’t standalone; it came with shared rules, courts and obligations. You (the uk) didn’t lose it “for nothing.” you gave it up while demanding the benefits without the framework.
