Economic protest is democratic in the bluntest sense: Everyone can do it. Everyone participates in the economy. That universality is its power. There are people who can’t/won’t march, risk arrest and/or death. They can't speak out, for good reason. /3

Governments need revenue. Trump demands fealty from big business. Corporations need labor and consumers. When consumer participation pauses, the cost is immediate, measurable. That interruption is what power understands fastest--but it can't be limited to a city or a day. It must be sustained. /2
