Nobody of Starmer's age would say 'landline' either, as it assumes the existence of another kind of line, which there wasn't.

Mahmood is mirroring this āracists will stop being racist to me if we concede that immigration is badā. They really wonāt! Theyāll say āoh so you admit this was bad all along - so now letās look at the people who should never have been let inā. end

The tone of an organisation is set from the leader on down, and the tone of Keir Starmer's leadership has always been 'say it if it is convenient'.

Listening to the FT podcast where they say Mahmood is McSweeney's top choice of successor and the idea that Starmer will go but the man most responsible for his catastrophic unpopularity will get to choose the next PM is, um, optimistic on his part

Mahmood is clearly an idiot who shouldn't be near the position she's ended up in, but what does that say about our moron of a PM who gave her a job.

For about ten minutes after Keir Starmerās conference speech it seemed like the PM understood what his voters wanted to hear ā an actual challenge to the racism of Reform. But instead of seeing it as the start of new messaging, it feels like his team just regarded it as job done.

Ultimately the vision of britain that starmer has is profoundly cynical, nasty and just not true. He thinks that abidicating his responsibility in showing that another option is maturity and doing the difficult thing, but he's literally just creating the hateful country he is so afraid of

We seem to have a government that both lacks the intellectual confidence to defend its policies but also thinks that it is so much smarter than everyone else that it can achieve its goals by a sort of sleight-of-hand, without anyone noticing the method.

Just think how long her budget speech is going to be. It's like a Radio 4 panel game show. "You've got 120 minutes to raise £30 billion pounds and you can't mention income tax. And you're time starts....."

I am obliged to report that when the No 10 spokesman gave this part of the statement there was a brief but heartfelt outbreak of laughter from journalists, one of whom later asked if the PM might thus be interested in a bridge he had to sell.

Watching Wes Streeting on Sky News successfully skewer the overnight Downing Street briefings against him, you almost have to admire the ineptitude of those around Keir Starmer in turning his own leadership problems into a major story while boosting the very politician they sought to kneecap

The worst you can accuse Panorama of doing is making a misleading edit ā and Iād dispute that! ā to make *a point that was true*. The programme aired without anyone seeing any issues with the edit. It was on iPlayer for a year without complaints. Donald Trump *did* incite Jan 6th.

The BBC's senior leadership resigning en masse over one dodgy edit in one programme, simply because the right wing press demands it, tells you everything you need to know about where the power really lies in that relationship

None of this is to say that BBC didn't make inappropriate editing decisions. But one doesn't need misleading edits to make the case that Trump encouraged the insurrection.

The Jan 6 "stop the steal" protests happened because Trump encouraged them. He told his followers, "be there, will be wild." In his speech that day at the Ellipse he said, "We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."
