I once worked with a guy that had the same birthday as me. It’s been more than 12 years since we worked together. We never talk to each other, but every year he sends me a message telling me Happy Birthday and it makes me smile.

Even Gorsuch got me a birthday present. Everyone has been so thoughtful this week.

I found this piece sad too, but mostly because it is part of a years-long effort by progressives to understand what "really" animates Trump voters. We already know! It is racism, misogyny and misinformation. I know that sounds condescending or whatever but it's simply what all evidence suggests.

I'm pro-union because I think workers should organize to balance the power that business owners have in various negotiations. It's true that unions have been weakened, but it's not because of multiculturalism. I would argue, it's because people seek to exploit divisions for their material interests.

Thus, there must be some things that transcend ethnicity, culture, and religion. If Vance cares about assimilation, does he demand that his relatives put on Levi's jeans and tan dress sneakers? Of course not. We must ask: is this a common community here or not?
