Love to see this on the big screen (sadly I'm not in London tomorrow). Complex, subversive, and genuinely haunting. Great work from Takeshi Kitano, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and arguably an acting-career best for Bowie. Often dismissed, but much much more than just a stunt-cast oddity.

Finally got to listen to this episode, loved hearing @grumpyandrew.bsky.social again. Was gifted a dvd of this movie many years ago as the person knew my love of M R James, so this episode was fantastic in imparting unknown facts and interesting thoughts on the movie, particularly movie vs story!

I was listening to @johnnyrestall.bsky.social’s podcast with @fatscoleman.bsky.social on it yesterday and they made a great point about how the genre differences between MANHUNTER and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS are communicated through the mis-en-scene of the scenes of Lecktor/Lecter’s cell.

This was my introduction to the podcast, and I was honestly bowled over by the perceptive and incisive discussion. It’s one of the best film criticism shows I’ve ever heard. And I don’t say that just because we’re 100% in accord re: the demon puppet, right down to the words we use to describe it. 😏
