People do realize that when we fund NASA, we’re not just strapping cash to a rocket and launching it into space, right? Those investments create jobs, support local businesses and drive innovation, all while expanding the frontiers of human knowledge.

I will say this again: Science isn’t just something that nerds do, it’s the foundation of the modern world. It’s why this app exists. It’s why child mortality rate isn’t 50% anymore. It’s how we’re able to launch people to the moon. It’s how we’re able to grow food that feeds half the world.

The Australian Academy of Science posted this reaction to the government's decision to withdraw Australia from ESO (which I had not heard about?!) 🔭

As the world looks up, Australia looks away | Australian Academy of Science
The Australian Government’s decision to withdraw from its association with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is short-sighted and risks long-term damage to the country's astronomy capability.

Thinking that everything you see is AI-generated is as bad as thinking nothing is AI-generated It's harder than ever to know what to believe, but you're lost if you believe nothing

This has never, ever, ever worked in workers’ favor in the history of labor automation and it’s incredibly foolish and self-destructive to think you’ll be the exception.

Less than one week after this post, the theoretical particle physics grants have been ruthlessly cut. PDRA positions are down by ~70% compared to the last funding cycle. Some groups cannot even hire postdocs for the next 4 years. This is on top of an effective 100% hiring cut for October 2026.

Renormalisation is a central concept in modern physics. It describes how the dynamics of a system change at different scales. A great way to understand and visualise renormalisation is the Ising model (some math, but one can follow without it ) 1/13
