I think a lot of us get hope wrong. Hope, I do not believe, is an emotion. In fact, hope makes space for lots of emotions to exist alongside it. You can DO hope scared, angry, sad etc... Hope doesn't find us. We make hope through action and struggle. It's a practice of living and is re-made daily.

Now, more than ever, we need people making art. The weirder and more distinct, the better.

Between storms and ICE occupation, there's never been a better time to connect to your community. Our modern world encourages a kind of individualism that doesn't help anyone. Hopefully now, people are starting to see why we're stronger together. And best of all, it's as easy as reaching out.

People consistently underestimate how dangerous cold can be, and how quickly it can hit you. Being stuck outside in cold like this is absolutely deadly. Especially for the elderly or ill. Check up on the people around you.

As this storm rolls in, I see a lot of people *not* realizing that whatever storms they had before, those were *before* Trump dismantled FEMA and shitloads of federal assistance. Connect to your local mutual aid groups and communities folks. They'll be who you rely on.

If the world has you stressed and you find yourself doomscrolling, do yourself a favor: put your phone on do not disturb, pop it in a drawer out of sight, and pick up a book, play some music, or play an offline game. Let your heart rest a little.

If you have a story, a game, a comic you want to work on, try and put in some hours this weekend. Dont waste time looking for the right tools or second guessing yourself. Even if you just vomit your ideas onto a page so they're ready to pick from, do it.

ICE is out of control. They are the source of the violence and can never be its remedy. In the short term, the only answer is for them to cease operations in Minnesota and leave. Immediately. In the slightly longer term, ICE must be dismantled and abolished. They cannot be reformed.

I've been trying to figure out what feels different about this ICE shit compared to the usual daily police violence. And the only answer I've come up with is that it feels like we've shifted from occupation to invasion and extermination. Or, hell, maybe it's just that there's two of 'em now.

Yes, it's incredibly demoralizing to see all this crazy shit happening with our politicians doing nothing. But that doesn't mean *no-one* is taking action. Your neighbors, friends, people you havent met and wouldnt guess, are out there trying to save and heal. They just don't get media coverage.

On the one hand, I love that social media, the internet, and spotify have enabled all sorts of folks to get their music out there. On the other, it feels like the ease of accessing music has created a culture of entitlement to that music, along with a loss of appreciation for the artists needs.

One of these days, I won't be terrified of every purchase above fifty dollars. Today is not that day.

If yall need to take a break to cool off, to heal, or just to get your head on straight, do it. A lot's happened in the last 24 and doomscrolling or arguing on social media ain't going to do you or the world any good. Take some time. Heal. Or, take that energy and go help. Whatever you need.

A reminder to everyone that now is *not* the time to get into arguments that are purely academic, or rooted in who made what prediction. That's just intellectual dick-waving. If you care about helping, focus on discussing what tactics can *actually help people,* and how to implement them.

I decided to try making chicken piccata today. I have never had it before. I'm not sure how much I like it, lol. But, it was a ton of fun to make and I'm glad I tried it. I think I learned a little from the process, too. And I have some friends who would probably love it.

When it comes to politics, it's always better to fight and lose than to simply acquiesce.

Hard to find a better person's advice to take on writing, and the whole thread is good. But this one, I think even a lot of veteran writers need to hear every so often.

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write." A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption. B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

Also, if anyone's worried they didn't accomplish that much this year? Fuck that. It's been a rough year, and we can't change what's already happened. Plus, you probably managed more than you thought, even if it was just growth and introspection. Look forward.

Not the biggest NY resolution person, but if you WANT to do something, make a goal to help people more often. Keep an eye out for chances to help in your day to day life. When you're pissed, take a moment to pause and consider their view. Folks need help and kindness now more than ever.
