Been looking at the updates on swiss railway projects, and I found this interesting picture from the construction of the Gléresse tunnel : An elevated treadmill jumps the road and the existing track to carry the tailings to barges in the lake, avoiding intensive trucking.

Okay if I can be selfish for a moment: I'm delisted from itch. In the UK you literally can not see my profile. A big chunk of my income, my living money, comes from bundles like this. It would mean a lot if you could share it, send it to friends. 🧵

: Fascinating clash of ages in Barmer India : A manually operated grade crossing, with an (extremely recently) electrified railway. Unclear if they automated the crossings once the modernisation of the line was complete.

Typical sanitary drainage configuration for larger aisle-layout bathrooms in California vs what would be designed/installed in Europe. The one to the left requires double the amount of piping and labor while also having 8 penetrations through the floor rather than 4, each requiring fire-stopping.

Why has noone made a strategy game with a hex grid like this ? It allows to both keep the advantages of hexes like more neighbors than square grids and diagonal movement, while also making it possible to put your units on a line that's actually straight

Lots of people claim Canada's housing crisis is really a global issue. But turns out: It is, in fact, made in Canada. Today on the Missing Middle podcast, we compare Canada’s record to other OECD countries (spoiler: it’s not flattering).

Would you or anybody you know want to volunteer your time to translate a website to Catalan? We would very much like our language selection toggle to have "Cat" as an option and we don't trust machine translation.

State capacity is when the metropolitan council of a city of 450k has a body to monitor usage of TIME and creates free solutions to infra capacity constraints : Rennes got schools to stagger openings, alleviating crush loading on the 1 yo(!) metro line b

Thanks to this park, I managed to thread a elevated line right in the heart of the job centers and barely destroy a single building. I'm sure noone will mind, who doesn't love an elevated metro line in their neighborhood park ?

My problem with places saying they "built enough housing for population growth" is that population growth is limited by housing. I think it's highly like that, if California had allowed more housing (SF and LA are famously NIMBY), they would have more housing and population than they currently do.

Crash the market for suburban houses by creating so much nice and dense housing in transit oriented neighbourhoods. Also massive wealth redistribution through whatever means necessary so that at maximum the wealthiest gains 10x what the poorest gain.

State capacity is when you can look at a super narrow (750mm) 1880' suburb-to-rural single track rail line with 50 yo cars and can decide "we should upgrade it to 1m gauge, increase frequency, triple platform length *and make it driverless*. But keep it single tracked" Then do construction in 1 year
