Agree with all of this. The entire thing is fucked. You've got new-ish TV writers who should probably be high up/running their own shows by now, competing each year with well established writers/showrunners who are now also struggling to land gigs.

Appreciate all of screen writing twitter commiserating and acknowledging what we are up against these last two days. Please know what I’m never trying to do is pit us all at different levels against each other, just trying to bring awareness to the mess and how it feels.

I was up for 5 shows this year. Sent strong samples and 2 showrunner recommendations for each job. Still didn’t get read. In some cases, execs did read and put me on a list. But Showrunners did not read. “We’re not staffing SE/ESE” level was basically the answer for all.

If A.I. were even half as good as they're claiming it is, they would not need to do much to promote it. The results would speak for themselves. Instead, they're spending a fortune to convince us to use it or they're literally forcing people who work for them to use it.

You know what separates writers who break in from equally talented writers who don't? A small circle of peers who gave brutally honest notes, celebrated tiny victories, and kept them going when quitting felt easier. Cultivating those relationships deserves as much focus as writing your next script.

Finally catching up with the last season of Resident Alien (was saving it because it’s almost over 😭). This is the kind of show I would have loved to staff on. I’m so sad it’s done. PS. Forever jealous of Cherry Chevapravatdumrong for staffing on this AND The Orville. I mean. That’s the dream!

An exec at Amazon Studios, someone who was always helpful and championed writers, clued me in on shows that were staffing, and answered IP questions for a series I like that Amazon owns and has in development, just got laid off in the Amazon massacre. I hate this. I hope he lands somewhere great!

If you’re a creative thinking about giving up because things feel impossible and time keeps passing without seeming like progress is being made, just remember Pedro Pascal didn’t become a household name until he was almost 50.

It took 2-3ish years to develop and make both these shows. Think of the YEARS 100s of people put into making these two shows only to get cancelled after 10ish eps. Awful.

We did it! We have finally elected members to the WGAW Board who will advocate for TV lowers and mids! Our concerns have been shoved aside for far too long. There’s finally hope we’ll now be heard! Voter turnout was still meh, but way way better than previous years! One step at a time. 🎉

I’m catching up with Matlock and you can just tell they have a really smart writers room. And I’m not just saying that because one of the writers is my CBS Program Mentee lol. They just seem really good at breaking story and playing with broadcast structure in a way that’s entertaining. Kudos!

The Pitt is fantastic & deserved the win on quality alone—but that 15 ep order is a ray of hope for me as well. Thought experiment I always ask people to do; what if there had only been 8 episodes in S1? Or 10? Doesn’t bear thinking about. The season was a terrific rich meal & I’m so happy for them.

Got CBS/Paramount on my 5th try (finalist 2nd try). CAPE fellowship: finalist 2nd time applying, got in on my 3rd try years later. Was an Orchard Project Episodic Lab finalist in 2022, then got nothing in 2024 and got in 2025. You have to keep applying. It almost never happens on the first try.

When people say TikTok/YouTube is going to replace movies and TV, this is what I’m gonna point them to. Because the audience for KPop Demon Hunters hasn’t just been adults — 12-16 year olds are currently obsessed with this movie. There is room for everything. TV, Film, and Social Media.

I’m rewatching Ugly Betty and only just realizing that Betty… was pretty thin. But everyone on the show is calling her fat. I know it’s the fashion industry. I worked in fashion in the 2000s. My mom was an editor. But seriously?! From a 2025 perspective, Betty is FAR from fat. The 2000s were wild!

A lot of new writers make the mistake that their competition is every other newbie trying to break in. It's easy to look at some hack with their cliche slasher script and think "I'm better than THAT guy!" But you're not competing with him. You're competing with feature writers with 2 jobs last year

I’m in Deadline again! CAPE opened their writers program to previously staffed writers (for which I am very grateful) and this new iteration of the fellowship focused on writing not just for TV, but also features, podcasts, video games and more! Check it out: deadline.com/2025/05/cape...

And both shows had lower and mid levels on both seasons. Great TV shows that make a cultural impact need full rooms. Hope more studios and shows start to realize that soon rather than skimp and miss out on becoming great TV like these shows.

It’s crazy how the goalposts keep moving. Before I was staffed it was “ohhh you’ve never staffed tho.” Now it’s “ohhh but you’ve ~only~ staffed on two shows.” Tomorrow I’ll sell a show and it’ll be like “ohhh you’ve ~only~ sold one show. Lol. Where does the disdain end?
