Family movie night for #31DaysOfHalloween again, so I introduced the family to the less-celebrated Rankin-Bass holiday classic Mad Monster Party. So many monster puns!

No new movie for this #31DaysOfHalloween, but my kid has really been into The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror lately. So we just marathoned a bunch that came after I stopped watching the show in thr 00s. Still some real gems to be had out there, but those first eight or so years really were the best.

I revisited a more recent favorite for tonight’s #31DaysOfHalloween. A Wounded Fawn really surprised me when it came out back in 2022. And even rewatching it now, it still holds a few surprises. Definitely worth adding to your horror watchlist if you like a movie that keeps you on your toes.

I watched another 35mm scan for tonight’s #31DaysOfHalloween. I don’t know how I’ve never seen Day of the Dead, but golly, it is one of Romero’s best. Just ratchets up the intensity until an explosive finale. It also features Bub, the goodest zombie good boy to ever enjoy classical music and guns.

Tonight’s #31DaysOfHalloween was The City of the Dead from 1960. A great old witch yarn starring Christopher Lee that is heavy on atmosphere and ahead of its time in some respects. Bonus points for an amazing head witch portrayed by Patricia Jessel who I recognized from my favorite Prisoner episode.

I watched The Seventh Sign for the current Gorley and Rust Satanic Panic season (and #31DaysOfHorror). There’s a good movie in here somewhere, and I’m pretty sure it’s just pregnant Demi Moore and a Jewish bais medrash student investigating ancient prophecies. Jürgen Prochnow menaces menacingly.

Family movie night so we watched Ghostbusters 2. The kid’s review was that Vigo the Carpathian “wasn’t as scary as you said he would be.” He must have not been paying attention to the whole mountain of skulls, castle of pain, throne of blood-sitting like I was at that age. #31DaysOfHalloween

Yesterday was all fairs and oktoberfests so no time for #31DaysOfHalloween, but today I got in another 35mm scan of a classic. Re-Animator is of course known for introducing the world to the legendary Jeffrey Combs. But can we also give it up for one of the all-time great screamers Barbara Crampton?

Trudged through the snow to get back to some folk horror, but this time from Finland with The White Reindeer from 1952 for my #31DaysOfHalloween. It plays like if Nanook of the North was a horror fairy tale. Some great visuals and atmosphere.

I went with the classic Evil Dead 2 for this #31DaysOfHalloween film. To quote a great music and film scholar - “It’s a brilliant film. It’s so funny and violent, and the soundtrack kicks fucking ass.”

Tonight’s #31DaysOfHalloween was Starve Acre, a moody folk horror with top-notch acting and score. It’s maybe too much of a slow burn, but it definitely flipped the script a couple times. I may have to check out the book it’s based on. Bonus points for creepiest bunny rabbit since Donnie Darko.

Watched a 35mm scan of this Video Nasty list-maker for my 6th #31DaysOfHalloween. Decent-looking scan, but Don’t Go in the House wasn’t that great. Psycho but with a flamethrower instead of a knife. Which sounds way better than it is, unfortunately.

Family movie night at the house, and of course the #31DaysOfHalloween is still in full swing so we went with a new kids classic “spooky” special. If you’re a fan of the Muppets or the ride at Disney, you should definitely check out The Muppets Haunted Mansion.

It feels weird to say that a movie featuring an 8-foot-tall naked zombie with, erm, quite the blessing flopping around is absolutely beautiful. But Danny Boyle did it again with 28 Years Later. Possibly better than any of the other films in the series. Day 4 of #31DaysOfHalloween for me!

Woof, I picked a stinker for #31DaysOfHalloween. House of Eden (starring, written, and directed by that girl who is always in my Reels with the videos where she plays a kid by holding up baby doll hands in front of her face) does a whole YouTube Blair Witch update with nothing new to say. Less even.

For my second #31DaysofHalloween watch, I tried Spider Labyrinth from 1988. It’s a pretty decent giallo flick with a Lovecraftian twist that kept me interested. Also, a wild creature at the end! (Not pictured here because that would be spoiling.)
