A Black man named Keith Porter was shot and killed by an ICE officer on New Year’s Eve. Marimar Martinez was shot five times by an ICE officer in Chicago who went on to brag about leaving seven holes in her body. This is not new but it is expanding.

Talking to a fellow professory friend tonight as we prep classes for next week. She asks me if I ever feel like we are setting out deck chairs on the Titanic. Such a relief. I feel crazy (intentional word choice) at the silence in higher ed, the push to run this semester like normal.

Heartbroken over the loss of another queer (Bi+!) crip ancestor in the passing of Loraine Hutchins. She was always so kind and supportive of me from the day we met at an intersectionality workshop I taught. Her bi pride and inclusivity activism has had such impact. Her memory is already a blessing.

I’ve been in two legal marriages with two different wonderful people over the years, as well as have meaningful relationships with my other partners. To me, legal marriage has always been about rights, especially as a disabled person. Ensuring my loves are insured, and can visit me in the hospital.

Literally none of the reports from the @transequality.bsky.social 2022 USTS have the world disability in them, which is wild, as at last count, 42% of trans Michiganders reported a disability, and 39% of trans people in the 2015 USTS did the same.

I cannot tell you how joyous it was to share the stage with my disabled comrades, members of the Social Work Disability Justice League in the audience, my partner in the front row, talking about what disability justice means in a social work context, and how we can co-create the future we deserve.
