"Alligator Alcatraz" is wrong and media should not use it. It's propaganda. Alcatraz held people convicted of crimes, particularly violent crimes. The Florida camp holds people *not* convicted of any crime. If they had been, they'd be in prison elsewhere. The site is a textbook concentration camp.

A key moment from my Catholic lore has got to be that I did my first communion inside a German prison. I have no pictures of that lovely day (no phones allowed, obviously), but I kept this brochure with the highlights of Tegel prison and the Spanish translation of the mass bulletin.

I did not go back to the Catholic Church because of Pope Francis, but because of other Jesuits who shared his preferential option for (and with) the poor. We might not have a Jesuit pope again for a long time but it was a breath of fresh air, a reminder that faith can be a force for good.

You know why European countries are so quiet about the El Salvador situation? Because they started the normalisation of extraterritorial detention of migrants and asylum seekers, often without any due process. The UK’s Rwanda plan. Italy’s attempted plan with Albania. And some still want to do it.
