The Herald’s investigation also showed that Acosta and his prosecutors agreed to seal the plea deal so that no one — especially not his victims — would find out about it, and that prosecutors led the sentencing judge to believe there was only one victim when in fact there were at least two dozen.

In February 2019, a federal judge ruled that Acosta and other prosecutors broke the law when they concealed the plea deal from more than 30 underage victims who were known to have been sexually assaulted by Epstein. Many of them had been interviewed by the FBI and federal prosecutors.
