Just read a 1969 interview with John Mitchell where he says "Of course, you don't talk about your confidences with the president any more than you do about your confidences with your wife," and man, that's a Chekov's gun of an aside.

I think one thing that makes this scene so good is that it underscores how a completely understandable, sympathetic, and rational impulse like this can lead to horror and destruction

I think one of the better, more subtle tributes to Robert Redford's life is the string of utterly iconic female co-stars who've come forward to eulogize him; each of them take-no-shit types like Fonda and Streisand, and every one of them without a single bad thing to say. A model for male behavior

It would also help if human reporters avoided things like "released by Warner Bros in 1942" — a total howler pretty clearly picked up from Google AI, which says WB was original distributor. It was not. I can't say it enough, that cute Google summary is wrong about old movies 99 times out of 100.

I recently rewatched The Insider; forgot that the news outlet in it is CBS’s 60 Minutes. In the end, Pacino’s character walks out. He says: “what got broken here doesn’t go back together.”

Randomly recalling that scene in I, Claudius where Caligula is announcing Tiberius's death to the assembled senators and a slave comes running out and says "He's still alive, he's asking for his dinner" and Macro has to go back in and smother him with a pillow, great scene

In My Man Godfrey, there’s this ludicrous line: “if other people can have five children, then so can other people.” And the way she nails the delivery makes it pure gold.

As someone who has lived my whole adult life in cities deemed “dangerous”—NYC, NOLA, and SF—I think a lot about how dense cities require patience, calm, and tolerance in the midst of social difference, which are of course exactly the civic virtues that the right resents being told to cultivate.
