This matches my experience with GitHub copilot. I subscribed for several months and finally ended my subscription recently. I used it for several different types of projects—It was good for some things, but very bad at other things that mattered (eg making up functions) and just not worth the cost.

Reading other comments and I don’t think this is actually a good characterization of his position, which, I think, boils down to the idea that we should be more cognizant of scope conditions/variability in relationships across different contexts, and it’s often not academics violating these ideas.

There is a longstanding vein of opposition to multilateralism in general within the Republican Party going back to the early 1900s, but it was more or less checked by the internationalist wing of the party. That began to change more in the 1990s.

As near as I can tell, several years ago the US cancelled the Beyond the Horizon and New Horizons training missions that did a lot of this stuff—vaccinating livestock, providing dental care, building clinics, etc.— throughout a number of Latin American countries. These were low cost wins.

Great thread. I have a speech where I basically tell our graduate students before their peer review assignments “don’t be as asshole.” I do think the graduate education process often implicitly or explicitly makes students confuse intellectually serious reviews with being borderline abusive.

This perfectly summarizes my refusal to integrate “intelligent” uses of AI in a class like, say, US foreign policy. To use it in even a remotely intelligent way they need the underlying knowledge and understanding to evaluate the AI content. That knowledge is a process thing, not an outcome thing.

Universities absolutely have a social advocacy mission—Especially land grant institutions.
