yes! and IF is *also* easy to game. An argument I often heard, mostly from economists, when presenting the rent-extraction practices of MDPI & co: "but the IF will go down!". Prices are sticky, the IF is way stickier. People who think that the IF helps to self-regulate the market are delusional.

We're experiencing an unbelievable deluge of submissions. At our journal we got ~200 per year in 2020. Last year it was 600. This year it's 800 with several months to go. So that's why we're slower to get stuff out for review.

Academic promotion, salary increases, all tied to number of publications. Not integrity, not quality, just numbers. Impact (citations) is also accessed by numbers only, and the mills also offer that service, they inject citations on other milled papers. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti....

People want a publication with their name on it (mostly for career advancement requirements, which often need N publications). The paper mill writes the paper and gets it published, and you pay them.

Peer reviewers are exhausted. It's common to spend *months* inviting reviewers, getting refusals, inviting more, maybe 12 or more, then 2 agree but 1 doesn't complete, so you go again. That's why your paper is in limbo. I'm very sorry, it's awful, but it's also an untenable academic labour issue.

TK: Authors did not reply or replied that they did not care if the paper would be retracted - they just needed it to graduate. Retaliation: we received lots of spam after retracting papers. We learned that paper mills can abuse peer review system. Do not rely on author-suggested reviewers. #PRC10
