I've seen claims the proper comparison would be deaths per car-mile traveled. But that only makes sense if you ultimately don't care about people being killed. "Yeah you were run over, but think how many miles your killer drove before obliterating you!"

The fantasy of self-driving cars is that they slot seamlessly into our existing infrastructure. But infrastructure already transformed to cater to the car driver would be further transformed to cater to the needs of the self-driving car itself.
