In episode 67 of the Into the Greenwood podcast, I refer to 1883's Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle as an inverse Die Hard. I stand by this comment.

Robin Hood is a Christmas character in the same way that the Lord of the Rings films are Christmas films.

Fascinating. And the specific mention of gift books printed by Wynkyn de Worde (a known printer of the medieval poem 'The Gest of Robyn Hode') indicates the distinct possibility that even in the 1400s, Robin Hood tales may have been incorporated into the Christmas gift-giving tradition!

I just finished a re-read of Michael Cadnum's 'In a Dark Wood'. Although, all in prose, the heavy (and often heavy-handed) use of florid descriptions, metaphor, and symbolism makes this Sheriff of Nottingham-centered adaption of 'Robin Hood and the Potter' feel deeply poetic. I adore this book!
