Kant argues that freedom has two elements: independence & autonomy. There's a Catholic discourse critical of modernity that levels various attacks on autonomy, but often I find what they really object to is the identification of freedom w/ *independence*. 1/

I always tell my students is that sin is, among other things, a failure to do the good that God intended to be done through you. (It’s a practical version of Augustine’s position.) I’d argue that such an absence of the good cannot really be “seen” or even directly treated with more good acts.

A very generous colleague read some of my draft chapters and was giving me some feedback. "This makes it sound like you subscribe to a correspondence theory of truth." Me: "Ah, yes, so, I think it sounds like that because I do."

If truth is adequation, then to what is it adequate? If you say "the object," that's true enough, but it can cover over how the truth is *abstract*. And so against what is the adequacy of abstraction measured? Lonergan's answer: the question to which one's understanding is an answer.
