New review! It's a welcome return to Jack Parlabane in Quite Ugly One Evening by @brookmyre.bsky.social (thx @fionabrownlee.bsky.social for the proof) - "Quite beautifully executed, and quite perfectly entertaining"

Review: Quite Ugly OneΒ Evening
Chris Brookmyre - Quite Ugly One Evening Published by Abacus Books (Little, Brown), hardback Β£22 Also available in ebook. I received a proof copy of the novel from the publisher for review purposes. Many thanks to Fiona Brownlee for facilitating this. First, the official blurb: Reporter Jack Parlabane thrives on chasing stories in unlikely places, and where could be less likely than a fan convention on a cruise liner celebrating a contentious Sixties TV series?

I see Farage was saying Keir Starmer is Reform's greatest asset. I think that's being rather ungratefeful towards Vladimir Putin, considering the money and resources the latter has channeled their way.

The my-novels-aren't-political-thing probably needs to be wrung out and left to dry at this point; but, obviously, all novels are political, because everything is, and nothing's ever quite as political as preferring the status quo.

I think you are right to publish, with the context of why made clear. I do think it would be clearer to describe the so-called joke as both homophobic and racist. The clearly conscious homophobic intent of the joke wouldn't take this form without its conscious racialised intent too.

The current argument of the British right is that Muslims turned out in "blocs" with "family voting" to cast their ballots for a party led by a gay Jewish man, and this shows that multiculturalism has failed, voting is "sectarian" and we are in a crisis. Hmmmmmm.

Grifters have worked out that "I'm just a fearless truth-teller willing to propose the necessary but politically incorrect solution," is a magic formula whereby if you're offensive enough the conversation focuses on whether you should have said it, and misses how your ideas are dumb as hell.

I appreciate all of these detailed analysis of whatβs wrong with the policy, but the crucial thing to keep in mind here is that Donald Trump sincerely, literally does not understand what a tariff is and when that is your starting point, nothing beyond it really matters.

You may laugh, but the Macbeths are a much better role model for a marriage than Romeo and Juliet. They discuss their problems (killing the king of Scotland), share their hobbies (killing the king of Scotland), and resolve their conflicts (by killing the king of Scotland).
