The my-novels-aren't-political-thing probably needs to be wrung out and left to dry at this point; but, obviously, all novels are political, because everything is, and nothing's ever quite as political as preferring the status quo.

I think you are right to publish, with the context of why made clear. I do think it would be clearer to describe the so-called joke as both homophobic and racist. The clearly conscious homophobic intent of the joke wouldn't take this form without its conscious racialised intent too.
