I've re-thought and while the below is true, the hypocracy is well-tread. I more want to frame it as, all this suggestion of Kirk as "doing it the right way," etc. insinuates that he is in contrast to those doing it the wrong way, but who are these people? What are these wrong politics?

Not entirely sure why this post made me think of this, but two points: One, Kirk was not particularly polite. He was polite relative to, like, screaming, but he regularly denigrated and belittled people to their faces and not in a clever way. Ad hominem attack, etc.

Something someone said in an interview on the Daily this morning had me thinking -- I think in individualist/modern western society we have a narrative of individual triumph over collective inaction and it strikes me that this, like so much political rhetoric, is an near-inverted smoke screen.

He mentions that discretionary purchases like his games will be the 1st to go so people can prioritize needs. Something to add: needs-based capital is not noble. Once it takes over discretionary $, it raises prices to max tolerance. "Can't afford a $15 game + $5 eggs" becomes $19 eggs.
