It's never a bad time to donate to your local food bank. Also, donations of food are helpful, but what they can really use is money. Food banks are able to buy in bulk - larger ones buy by the truckload - and they can make a dollar go a LOT farther than buying food at retail prices.

If I could add on to this, in most cases food banks can use cash more than food donations, check with your local food bank of course. At least in larger cities, food banks can buy in bulk and that money can get a lot more food at a much lower cost than retail.
