Exploring some really fabulous grasslands in Ireland at the moment. Particularly stunned by the abundance of splendidissma and nitrata at some sites! Colemannianus is also pretty abundant as many of the grasslands are on limestone.

This Beech tree may be dead, but it’s far from lifeless!! What an amazing array of fungi (and slime moulds) found on just one log. See ALT text for some attempted IDs.

The huge plasmodium I started watching the other day can be given a name at last. One fragment of it is already morphing into sporocarps. It's Badhamia utricularis, the most beautiful specimen I have ever found. Kicin, Wielkopolska (western Poland).

A lovely day yesterday seeing some of my favourite waxcaps 🥰 It was wonderful to see them again even though some weren’t looking quite their best because of the recent dry weather. Also saw Earthy, Snowy, Slimy, Blackening, Golden & Pale. 17 waxcaps in a day is not bad!!

Wow, nature is too cool! Structures on stinkbug hind legs that used to be interpreted as ears are actually chambers with fungi. The bugs coat their eggs in those fungi to protect them against parasitoid wasps. 🧪 Defensive fungal symbiosis on insect hindlegs | Science

It's been a late start this year with the dry weather but the grassland fungi are finally appearing. I'm going to post a waxcap species each day as we move through peak fruiting season, hoping to encourage folks to recognise and record this important group.
