Things I’m framing: seaweed “prints” I got in Woods Hole this summer, that look like neurons; a hand-painted amate from Mexico; a collage from my friend Pablo who has allegedly made about 16,000 of them over the last 20 years, and plans to display as many as possible one day at the same time.

It bears repeating that nearly the entire US enterprise in science and technology has been irreversibly gutted. This is shocking. All this loss has occurred without any real benefit to the average US citizen. Except we now have the biggest, best funded secret police force perhaps ever. Yay for us!

Just listened to this episode with Eve Marder and cannot recommend this Podcast enough. Love the concept of choosing your suitable tolerance level of ambiguity and “complexity layer” of phenomena or mechanism to dive into.

In 1613, the Carmelite monastery of El Carmen was founded in San Angel (now southern Mexico City). Eventually it was abandoned and when Zapatista soldiers tried to loot it during the Mexican Revolution they found a bunch of mummies in the basement. They’ve been on display in the crypt ever since.

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of the founding of Tenochtitlán in 1325, the Mexican government built these monstrously large replicas of the most important Aztec artifacts, and spread them around the zócalo. It was quite the scene.

The Templo Mayor was the main temple in Tenochtitlán, at the heart of the Aztec empire. The archaeological dig began in 1978 when utility workers came across the Coyolxauhqui monolith. Here is the site in front of the national cathedral.

In 1933 Diego Rivera was commissioned to paint a mural at Rockefeller Center. In it he included an image of Lenin, but was asked to remove it as being anti-capitalist. He refused and the mural was then plastered over. He then repainted this version of it in Bellas Artes, in CDMX.

In 1947 Diego Rivera painted the mural Dream of a Sunday afternoon in the Alameda Central in the Hotel del Prado. In the center was the Catrina, based on an engraving by Posada who is to the right of the Catrina. On the left is a toad-like Diego Rivera as a child.

Mexican general and president Antonio López de Santa Anna, lost his leg during the Pastry War and had a military funeral for it. Later in Mex-Amer war, an Illinois regiment captured him and kept his prosthetic leg. His second leg was also captured and used as a baseball bat. This was his third leg.

Mexicans take their chips seriously.
