May I recommend The Good Soldier Švejk on this fine day? An unfinished novel by Jaroslav Hašek, it is a hilarious account of passive resistance/malicious compliance set in WWI.

Check out The Man Without a Transit Pass by Jaroslav Hasek, just wild absurd short stories. Or any of Hiroko Oyamada's books (I really dug The Factory and Weasels in the Attic)

Last book of the old year (ok, a couple of chapters today). Book list tells me I've read it before, in 1997, but I can remember a general vibe. Our summer trip to Prague inspired me to revisit, and yep, it's damn good. No surprise that it was a huge (WW1) influence on Catch 22.

read The Good Soldier Svejk in highschool by printing out in the entire book off a libcom pdf in 3×3, resulting in extremely small text, but bringing page count down to about 100 pgs, within my yearly printer limit. this is also how i read The Conquest of Bread

I know you're not supposed to comment about the books but can't resist regarding Svejk. What a book! Definitely time for a re-read. An incredible parody of WWI and the stuffiness of society at the time, and just so funny! Also the original drawings that accompany the text are wonderful

I read this when I was ten or eleven, and found it really funny. I read it again as an adult, and still found it funny, but in a different way. It's a good book. "The good soldier Švejk" is the English title.
