It’s the 140th anniversary of Binscarth, MB. I’m descended from its namesake, the Scarth clan & we’re having a Scarth reunion at our farm this summer including a visit from a cousin who still owns Binscarth in Orkney. It just struck me that this basically a religious ritual of settler colonialism.

There is something deeply unsettling (and consistent) to me about how we collectively do not value the natural world enough to care for it but we take such puerile cynical exploitative pleasure in sharing AI generated images of animals for ‘cute’, clicks and/or money.

Would love to find a good, recent-ish (last 10 years) state-of-the-field for US labor history and subfields to use with advanced undergrads. Also method debates, if they exist. 🗃️

My priest went above and beyond to help craft the most beautiful funeral for some friends of mine who had a still-birth late last year (complete with a hand-made casket). Totally just took care of all the details like it was nothing so that I could just worry about the pastoral care.

Not a problem for folks, I guess.

Reading this ethnography from 2021 on the formation of the new elite and this passage is so revealing as to why the ruling classes are shoving GenAI down our throats. Their educational formation was literally about how to avoid the careful work of reading, writing, and thinking.
