I don’t have any special insight into the gov’ts mind, but I strongly suspect that they are using s.33 like this in order to get the controversy over these bills over with quickly and long before the next election. They are counting on us forgetting about this and moving on.

Thing is, I’m not totally against s.33. But legislatures’ use of it should be justified in ways that are public, legible, slow, and repeated. That’s what seeing the case through the courts achieves and is pre-emptied by pre-emotive invocation of it. 1/

The notwithstanding clause is an integral part of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Governments can invoke it, but how they do matters. Some Conservatives understand this. Right-wing populists do not. 🧵

Besides being tragic, this also discouraging. I’ve appreciated a lot of the changes the city has made under the “vision zero” banner. These events don’t prove that those aren’t working (we need a deeper analysis for that), but they don’t reflect what we expect from those changes.

Oh man! Not one of the greats, but one of my favourites. I treasure those songwriters (like Snyder, Randy Newman, Louden Wainwright) who just can’t stop themselves from being funny even at their most poignant. He was an alright guy.

This is a very good piece that sums up a lot of the field I’ve been working in for a decade or so (interaction between pluralism, social psychology, and epistemology). I guess that means I should have something more to say about it. Maybe I will, but for now a day of meetings. Read it.
