Cher’s Christmas (2023) was a major return to making music. After touring at the end of the 2010s and focusing on social causes throughout the pandemic, Cher got back into the studio to record her first holiday collection.

I’m very sad to hear about Diane Keaton’s passing. She was such an inspiration to me, especially during my 20s. When I was writing my first book, Men and Music, I was living alone and single, really struggling with what I was supposed to do with my life.

Following a successful residency called Classic Cher and winning the Billboard Icon Award, Cher scored her first big film role in 8 years with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), playing Ruby, lead character Sophie's grandmother.

Cher returned to album making with Closer to the Truth (2013). Though 12 busy years lapsed between albums, it is a logical followup to 2001's Living Proof. Truth picks up on the previous LP's themes of empowerment ("Woman's World"), universal love ("Sirens"), & the tribulations of romance ("Red").

Cher returned to the big screen with Burlesque (2010). The film follows Ali (XTina), who arrives in LA where she aspires to success as a singer. Cher plays Tess, the owner of a struggling club who finds a diamond in the rough with Ali; the ingenue’s live vocals revive the bar as a hotspot.

In Stuck on You (2003), Matt Damon & Greg Kinear star as conjoined twins who leave their cozy Martha's Vineyard home to try their luck in Hollywood. Cher plays an exaggerated version of herself who selects the twins to co-star with her in a new TV crime procedural. It's an odd but sweet comedy.

Cher played her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour for 325 dates from June 2002 through April 2005. It was a critical & commercial success from the start, & it is still one of the highest grossing concert tours of all time. In 2003, a film of Cher’s tour stop in Miami aired as a TV special on NBC.

While I don’t normally cover compilations, I must make an exception for The Very Best of Cher (2003). Released in the midst of the diva’s Farewell Tour, this greatest hits package was a smash success, peaking at no.4 on the Billboard 200 and going 2x platinum; it’s one of her best selling albums.

Living Proof (2001) is my favorite Cher album. I have clear memories of buying the CD at Sam Goody in the mall the fall the album dropped. Building on the sound of Believe, Living Proof capitalizes on Cher's dance diva status with house, dance pop, and Eurodance sounds.
