It's hard to overstate how fully engaged Chicago and the surrounding suburbs are in this ICE madness. There are neighborhood watch alerts, spontaneous crowds gathering outside schools at pick up & drop off plus madly blowing whistles and honking car horns, this city is fighting back and hard.

Historically, the Chicago impulse to say “you’re not FROM here, you don’t BELONG here, and if you know what’s good for you you’ll get OUT of here” has, um, not usually been a tool used on behalf of anti-racist solidarity, but we’re more flexible people than we’re given credit for

People are fucking pissed. You can intellectually know what’s happening, see the videos, and still be traumatized and shocked when it comes to your block, no matter what community you live in.

“People were coming out of their homes to record, to yell, to tell ICE to leave our neighborhood — it was a whole bunch of people with their freaking goldendoodles. What am I going to do, go back to my Zoom call when people across the street are being denied their constitutional rights?”
