The Society is saddened to hear of the death of Sir Nicholas Grimshaw (1939-2025). An inspirational architect and always a gentlemen, his buildings are beautiful, original and inventive solutions to elegantly analysed briefs. We can think of no finer tribute than listing his Waterloo Int. Terminal.

🔥NEWS: Bath Fire Station (1938) has just been rejected for listing by DCMS, the second case in a week where the Minister has controversially overruled the advice of both Historic England and C20 Society, who recommended a Grade II designation. Avon Fire & Rescue Service are now proposing demolition.

🔥BREAKING NEWS: Shoreditch Fire Station (1959-65) in Old Street has just been controversially rejected for listing by DCMS, ignoring the recommendation of Historic England and C20 to designate the building at Grade II The issuing of a COI now paves the way for potential redevelopment or demolition.

NEWS: C20 is disappointed to learn our listing application for the former National Wildflower Centre (Hodder + Partners, 2000) in Merseyside will not be taken forward for assessment by Historic England. Highlighted in our 2025 Risk List, Knowsley Council have now intend to demolish the building.

🐟 Concerning news that the most architecturally distinguished fish & chip shop in Britain, Oakwood Fisheries in Leeds (1938), closed in July after 85 years, with the owner citing ‘circumstances beyond his control’. Though Grade II listed, we hope this doesn't mark the end of its days as a chippie.

NEWS: This beautiful Welsh slate mural was designed by architect John Sam Williams in 1957 and located at the former Caernarfonshire Technical College in Bangor. When the college relocated in 2024 the mural was at risk, but thanks to C20 Cymru it's been saved and moved to the new Coleg Menai campus.

C20 welcomes news that the Prince Charles Cinema have submitted a formal bid to Newham Council to takeover the former Stratford East Picturehouse, which closed in July 2024. Designed in 1996-97 Burrell Foley Fischer, it's viewed as one of the best examples of British cinema architecture of the 90s.

Happy Yorkshire Day! Here's one of our favourite C20 buildings in God's Own Country: The Grade II* listed Scargill House Chapel, by George Pace (1958-61) The Scandinavian inspired chapel contains no pulpit, lecturn or stained glass, as Pace 'wanted the chapel to appear to grow out of the dale'.

💥The Bernat Klein Studio has been saved! This morning the coalition of Scottish heritage organisations secured the property at auction with a winning bid of £279,000. The studio will now be restored and brought back into public use, creating a new venue for creative arts in the Scottish Borders.

Here's an exclusive shot of the faithfully recreated Monument to the Queensway (Mersey) Tunnel in Liverpool, which topped out in recent days. The 60ft Art Deco light beacon was originally one of a pair, designed by Herbert Rowse in 1934 to celebrate the engineering and construction of the tunnel.
