We visited the Church of the Holy Spirit in Vienna (Jože Plecnik, built 1910-13). A sort of abstracted doric temple front on the outside. Bright and open interior. The first reinforced concrete church in Austria.

Karl-Seitz-Hof in Vienna. Hubert Gessner, 1926-27. Social housing megablock on a similar scale to the better-known Karl-Marx-Hof. Named after Karl Seitz, mayor of Vienna and later head of state of Austria.

An excellent tour at the Tugendhat house in Brno. Lilly Reich was acknowledged as the co-designer of iconic furniture items like the Barcelona and Tugendhat chairs, previously often attributed to Mies alone.

At the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, CZ Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. 1938. “God is in the details”, as the architect said.

On a visit to the extraordinary, sprawling former home and studio of sculptor Xavier Corberó with www.iconichouses.org/news/the-wor.... He moved there in 1968 and was still adding to it when he died in 2017. Currently undergoing restoration, it will become a cultural space open to the public.

Les Escales Park apartments in Barcelona, visited with iconichouses.net. Designed by Josep M. Sert while in exile in the US, and built in 1973. Corbusier influenced duplex units, with a modernist interpretation of the Catalan vault.

The rigorously rationalist former HQ of Gustavo Gili Publishers (Francesc Bassó and Joaquim Gili, 1954-61). In a Barcelona suburb on a visit with iconichouses.org to Walden 7. Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, inaugurated in 1975. Conceived as a stacked vertical community, and built on the site of a former cement factory.

On tour in Barcelona with iconichouses.org: a visit to Gaudi’s Casa Milà. The house was nicknamed “La Perdrera” (the quarry) by the neighbours who were much disturbed during its construction, thinking it resembled a dusty stone quarry.

A visit to the Barcelona Pavilion, the 1986 reconstruction of Mies van der Rohe’s 1929 Pavilion. The reconstruction was controversial but we think it was a good idea.

Passivhaus expert James Traynor of ECD Architects yesterday at the Isokon taking about the energy-efficient retrofit of two housing developments. Heating requirements reduced to virtually zero, and pleasant temperatures during a heatwave.
