Did you know Gravesend Town Pier is the oldest surviving iron pier in the world? It opened in 1834 and re-opened following restoration in 2002. I was there today for a seaside-themed pop-up event talking about my Seaside 100 book with a backdrop of amazing views across the Thames

It was a real treat to be back @newnhamcollege.bsky.social over the weekend. I was a student there but have learnt much more about the wonderful buildings by Basil Champneys since I left and it was fun to share my research with alumnae at the summer garden party celebrating 150 years of Old Hall.

#BritanniaPier at #GreatYarmouth has been re-invented more times than most due to multiple fires. The 1958 theatre is the 5th pier head entertainment venue! A new entrance building was officially opened yesterday. I'm hoping they keep what's left of the 1960s orange fascia...

Enjoyed giving my talk at #GreatYarmouth for the #NationalPiersSociety on Friday then yesterday I spoke to the Civic Society in The Place, new library and university centre in converted department store, really well done integrating elements of the old shop

Some #GreatYarmouth #ArtNouveau. The resort developed rapidly either side of 1900 and had a few local architects who embraced the fluidity of European ornament. The Hippodrome (1 & 4) is the supreme example but details can also be seen in the old Arcade (2) and Art School (3)
