Spoiler for an upcoming piece. The development industry keeps warning the City of Ottawa that development charge hikes will lead to people moving outside the City. The industry's warnings have been eerily prescient.

One of the things a lot of people don't realize is how much Canada piggybacks off US agencies for environmental standards, energy use and safety standards. We have standards bodies but for decades they've been taking US standards and adapting them. We're going to have to do it all now.

People may not realize the extent to which we've deprioritized the military. Even for Canadians who are willing and able to serve, the CAF lacks capacity to onboard and train them in a reasonable timeframe. We have failed to maintain even the most basic institutional capabilities.

The only explanation I can come up with is that Ford agreed to publicly grovel to Lutnick as a concession in negotiations and to boost Lutnick’s standing with Trump. Ford came out swinging but he couldn’t take the heat, and now he’s just a liability for everyone.
