After Trump wrote, in reference to Iran, “A whole civilization will die tonight,” the entirety of the House Democratic leadership issued this joint statement:

If Trump gives an order to use nuclear weapons in Iran, everyone who helps implement that order - right down to the guys driving trucks on the airbase - should end up in front of a firing squad.

It would be very helpful for Democrats to establish now, IN ADVANCE, that future Democratic administrations will allow any relevant criminal proceedings to go forward, and that decisions made by military leaders today could have life-changing consequences for them in the future.

And yes, I feel strongly about it. I know many of my colleagues think this may be a step too far, and may infringe upon academic freedom. I strongly disagree. We cannot, as a scholarly profession, be expected to be taken seriously if we fail to eject obvious charlatans. This is on us.

The Republican party has been fascist curious for my entire life and they have done everything possible to show us what sort of monstrous people they are when the brakes are off. This is a party that is stumping for other dictators and far right movements and there's zero to be redeemed in it.
