god I love the Vancouver SkyTrain. just missed a train to waterfront but the off-peak frequencies are better than most peak frequencies in Melbourne

this morning I arrived in Vancouver, marking the end of a 6,296km rail journey from the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax, NS to the shore the Pacific here in Vancouver, BC. I suppose now that I've done the Atlantic-Pacific I should get around to doing the Indian-Pacific back home

delighted to report the Canadian Rockies are still one of the most beautiful places on earth. the perfect scenery for my final full day of my transcontinental rail journey

and now for the real meat and potatoes of this trip: VIA Rail train #1, The Canadian. my home for the next 4 nights and the next 4,406 kilometres

and yes I'm aware the legacy TTC trams in the city are just as hopeless with signal priority (see this video from the Spadina tram) but for a brand new system to repeat this is just unacceptable. you can fix this by moving the tram phase before the turn phase, no time lost for cars in the cycle!!!!!

friends, on this most tram of Tuesdays, let me take you on a little journey into a tale of two new tram systems here in Ontario, just 80km apart as the crow flies but a world apart in operations: the Kitchener-Waterloo ION tram, and the brand new Toronto Line 6 Finch West tram

I made it to Toronto a few days ago, meaning I've now completed 1,890km of my 6,296km transcontinental rail journey.

I've been a bit sick the last few days (I think the -20° days in Montreal got to my respiratory system) so time to catch up on what I haven't posted yet: first up, the REM in Montreal is absolutely fantastic, a real demonstration of how great automated metros can be

woke up this morning looking out onto the Atlantic from Halifax Harbour, and this time in 13 days (including a few days in Montreal and Toronto) I'll be looking out onto the Pacific Ocean in Vancouver, having travelled there entirely on the iron road. may you all have a lovely 2026

arrived 2 hours late into Halifax due to freight getting priority and the freezing rain, but at least it's very atmospheric

Yep. Metro Tunnel good. But the rail network (and the broader public transport network) can't reach its full potential while the buses, which in many areas is the only PT service, are so poor.

Melbourne's Metro Tunnel opened today, a city shaping project that's been discussed for over 20 years and been under construction for the last 10 years. 5 brand new underground stations, and once February comes round, a complete transformation in how I and so many other people move around our city

The good news just keeps on coming

the new State Library station entrance and concourse are now open, including the connection to Melbourne Central! I've timed it and I'm delighted to report that it's only 2 mins and 35 secs from street to platform 3/4 at Melbourne Central this way vs. 3 mins 28 secs normally via Melbourne Central

Parkville is gorgeous and so capacious. great demonstration of how much natural light a cut and cover station can get. only 6 more days to go 🥰
