Sad to hear of the passing of astronomer Alan Hale. Comet Hale-Bopp was the first comet I ever photographed, using my dad’s 35mm camera and slide film (!)

Keep an eye on the dusk sky over the next week, and you’ll see Jupiter and Venus getting ever closer to each other in the west, in one of the best planetary pairings of 2026. Here’s our latest post on the cosmic planetary tryst for

Cosmic Tryst: Venus Meets Jupiter at Dusk
It’s a familiar annual question, that we’re already hearing as we enter into June. “What are those two bright objects in the west?” They’re none other than the two brightest planets in the sky, Jupite...

Much more methane and CO2 detected in the interstellar comet than in comets from our solar system. Very cool that we can figure this out from afar!

Reports of an explosion heard around Boston are believed to be a significant bolide/meteor entering the atmosphere, a very large flash was detected by GOES-19 satellite that does not correlate with active thunderstorms.

I’ve been asked a bit over the past week about the ‘astronomy of Artemis 2,’ so I thought I’d annotate two key images from the mission. The crew of Ingenuity had an enviable view as they passed into the shadow of the Moon, with Saturn, Mars, and Mercury arrayed to the observer’s right.

Wow! The astronauts brought the Apollo 18 flag to space with them. This flag would have been placed on the Moon had Nixon not canceled the program, which ended with Apollo 17.

A better annotated image of the two craters around Mare Orientale that Jeremy Hansen asked to be named "Integrity" after the Artemis II Spacecraft and Carroll Crater, named for the wife of Reid Wiseman, who passed away in 2020 after a 5-year battle with cancer.
