Media consolidation can really come back to haunt. City Paper was acquired by the Blocks in 2023 (after orig being indie-owned, then bought by the Butler Eagle in 2016). We had 2 great alt weeklies but in 2001, the City Paper bought InPgh; similar to how the PG bought the Pittsburgh Press in '92).

The closing of the CP and the PG aren't just like, a bummer, or like a regular fuck-the-Blocks moment. It's a drastic reduction in citizens' ability to stay informed and hold our local government accountable, which in today's political environment will have consequences that make my head spin.

Pittsburgh has many great journalists, so a new outlet seems natural. And necessary. I was a community journalist for a decade, and an editor-in-chief for a few more besides. I'd be happy to pitch in however is needed to get something up and running.

The Blocks are an evil, terrible family. They lost to their union and are closing the paper as a temper tantrum.

It didn’t have to be this way. But the Blocks have been dismantling print news in PGH for decades, starting with the purchase and absorption of their rival paper, accelerating with their move to stop print daily in 2018 (making Pittsburgh the largest US city without a print daily at the time).

Shuttering the PG and the City Paper are vindictive decisions from the (frankly, monstrous) publisher that will hurt the city. I hope that someone resurrects the Pittsburgh Press as the New Pittsburgh Press or something. 1/
