I read The Public Scholar this weekend. It has very practical advice for academics who want to do more public-facing writing. I liked that it has a lot of examples, and is easily transferable to different disciplines.

The University of Maryland got hit with a ten percent cut in state funding for FY27, resulting in hiring and travel freezes as well as deferred maintenance. Expect more colleges to adopt midyear budget cuts this fall as oil prices stay high and inflation ticks back up.

Barrett Taylor and I make this argument about the way higher ed is governed. In the middle-third of the 20th century higher ed grew rapidly but was mostly exclusive to whites. The government invented and trusted. Starting in the 70s the sector diversified and trust was replaced by accountability.

Been sitting with how many Black Civil rights leaders bled and died to ge the voting rights act only for it to be struck down by this white supremacist supreme court. This is from bloody Sunday which catalyzed passage of the VRA. It's hard not to shed tears at what we've lost.
