I'm often told on here that clothes are meaningless, and to some degree, I agree. However, in this instance, the GOP's aesthetic transformation shows how they use populist style to position themselves as populist outsiders, even as they serve elite interests.

Republican style is part of a performative rebellion. Not against the ruling class, but the elites that police tone and taste. Which is to say legacy media, academics, and coastal cosmopolitans who talk about "political correctness." There is a lot of culture war; little policy to help working ppl.

Yet, the core GOP platform is the same: tax cuts for the rich, starving the state, slashing public programs, rolling back regulations, funding the military, etc. This was proven with The Big Beautiful Bill. The GOP is more nativist now than before, but it still serves elites.

All this has allowed the GOP to position itself as a loud outsider. When Trump says "drain the swamp," he's talking, in part, about getting rid of the Brooks Brothers bureaucrats. (Notably, his two biggest DC foes — Mueller and Romney — are very Brooks-y).
