I wrote about why governments must stop relying upon Facebook and X/Twitter to communicate vital disaster information to the public a while back - unfortunately, this issue is only getting worse. You can do something about it: write to your local authorities and demand they change their approach.

On Reddit, Orange County residents are very justifiably angry that local authorities are posting vital evacuation information on X and Instagram…which both require accounts if you want to be able to view videos easily and completely. How many people use neither? This has got to stop.

As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.

I dislike the equating of slop generation to laziness bc laziness actually has value. Lazy art still expresses the artist, and laziness can often breed cleverness, something not possible with sloppers, though they believe they're clever bc a program told them so. Slop use is a desire to be served.

I do think this is an interesting example of the kind of bad writing that a lot of people (including beginning writers) think of as good writing. The metaphors that don't hold up to any scrutiny, the overwritten descriptions of non-actions, etc

A whole lot of these lines with one to three too many layers of abstractions. "he shrugs the way men shrug when feeling places a hand on the neck and says be still” Ah. Yes. Classic type of shrug.

The language is some nonsense though. Here's basically the climax line. The grove releases a breath like stitching through an already closed wound. Oh yeah, THAT kind of breath. Glad you clarified.

I agree the Granta AI story is bad for the reasons people are literally nonsensical (similar to OpenAI metafiction story)—but also… man, it does not have a story. There’s no narrative. It does read like a parody of a certain type of poet-turned-novelist fiction.

Twitter made a lot of people feel important. Many of those people confused this with Twitter being important.

I don’t care if people dislike Bluesky - but I do find it deeply cringe when I see people who have apparently decided to dedicate huge amounts of their energy in this deadly time in global affairs to whining about how much a social media website sucks while they still use it constantly.

I just think it’s really funny when people who make hating Bluesky 80% of their personality also spend vast amounts of the time allocated to their one wild and precious life on Bluesky. When I start hating something, I stop doing it. Which is why I left Twitter.

TBF, many who agonize the most about the perceived loss of political and cultural influence as a result of Musk buying & 4chan-lite-ing Twitter and their belief that Bluesky is an insufficient alternative/solution would readily acknowledge that they have an unhealthy relationship with social media.

lots of people, mainly political journalism types, seem to still have an outsized view of twitter, or just an incorrect view entirely. Obviously the site lack the cultural relevance it once had, but I don’t even think it forms in-group narratives and whatnot anymore. I think other formats do that.
