Kazuki Irie has a forthcoming paper in NeurIPS that studies the following idea: Linear attention has cheap, unbounded memory but low precision, whereas softmax attention has expensive, bounded memory but high precision. These can be combined to build better transformers. arxiv.org/abs/2506.00744
