Well, we didn't make it this year. Damn. But I'm making progress on the next issue--we have a lot of great articles and reviews in the hopper and I've just wrapped up a giant freelance project. So: Work for a better new future, everyone, because it isn't going to happen by itself.

I started work on the next issue in 2023. The year since has included a family death, Arthur spending 5 months in the hospital, *me* going to the hospital, emergency home repair, and other tribulations. We are deeply sorry for the loss, to his family, his friends, to the sf community, and to sf scholarship. Brian was unfailingly kind and charming with us to degrees only matched by his generosity and productivity. By themselves, his translations of French proto-f&sf made him a giant, in our eyes.

So much popular SFF of the latter twentieth century reads to me as reworking the orientalist occultism of the preceding half-century—e.g. how much Julian May's MANY-COLOURED LAND or Clarke's CHILDHOOD'S END have drawn from Theosophy or Aurobindo. This is fascinating to me on at least three levels

I remember how indignant David Hartwell got when I said in a NYRSF editorial that Sandy Petersen & Lynn Willis were the most important figures in reviving Lovecraft, but I still think it's true. Gamers read. (Sandy designed the CALL OF CTHULHU rpg and Lynn ran the Mythos fiction line for Chaosium.)

I have spent decades calling him "noted anti-war writer David Drake" because that's how he wanted his works to be received, even though they too rarely were. We were always happy to have him in the magazine and on a professional, critical, and personal level we--I--will miss him enormously.

Just heard about the passing of Chapel Hill author David Drake. He was a man who processed his Vietnam war trauma through SF. He came back from the war and within 72 hours was in Duke law school. That was how the army dealt with PTSD in the 70s. (1/?)
