When I moved from America to New Zealand the traffic lights bothered me. They were low and positioned at the corners of the intersection. US traffic lights seemed better: suspended overhead, centered above the lanes. It wasn't until 6 months later that I realized how stupidly America-brained I was

I swear the things AWS manages to squeeze out of their data centers should be classified as black magic. You can now create instant copies of EBS volumes with single-digit millisecond latency. Sounds simple - but this is an amazing feat of engineering.

I use AWS a ton but Lambda still astounds me. Throw some code in a function, send 1m requests as fast as you can. It ate up all available file descriptors on my little t3 box and still ran 18k RPS with a p99 of 0.3479s. Not many services can go from 0 to 18k RPS instantaneously with this p99.
