Years ago, my mom had a sinus blockage that required surgery. She had the choice of going in through the eyebrow, leaving a small scar, or having her face peeled down from an incision in her hair to avoid a facial scar. She chose to have her face peeled halfway off. Vanity is a hell of a drug.

Boomer, the Pacers mascot, visited my kids’ school today, just because, and it was basically the thrill of their little lives so far.

I grew up in a Midwestern suburb, which means it’s very clear to me that “this is a crime-ridden shithole“ is just a euphemism for “I can see Black people and poor people and I don’t like it.“ This is the core definition of “midwestern nice”—the deployment of euphemism for plausible deniability.
