A new horror bookstore opened near me so I stopped by to support them. Two of these books I found through my blusky feed, thanks to discovering @shortwavebooks.bsky.social and @willowcatelyn.bsky.social here. And then got an @datlow.bsky.social collection that's been on my want list.

During the big fight scene at the end of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the dude next to me started absolutely howling with hysterical laughter. And kept it up for the whole scene. Never wanted to get away from someone in a theater so fast.

I gasped out loud when I saw Altered States on the release list. I got the DVD off eBay just to have a copy, delighted to upgrade this one!

Finally got to catch On Becoming a Guinea Fowl. Went in blind just knowing this was from the director of the excellent I Am Not A Witch and that it had good reviews. It's now my non-horror film to beat for 2025. A surreal, heavy watch, but I'm on board for future Rungano Nyoni features.

Got hooked on the @criticacclaim.bsky.social podcast and have been slowly working through the backlog. Finally checked out House of Hummingbird after hearing @witneyseibold.bsky.social's rave review and it's been a beautiful cinematic discovery. Glad this didn't pass me by.

I'm so glad all the horror/film folk I follow moved to bluesky. Would never have had Sinners on my radar had it not been for my whole feed raving about it. Saw it tonight. The opening juke joint scenes are magical. Best soundtrack I've heard in a long time too.

A rec for Korean horror fans! Bluebeard, a fun twisty serial killer thriller! I can't remember how it got on my radar, feels like the kind of thing I would have picked up off @colorsofthedark.bsky.social (and if not, hey, Deep Cuts rec from a listener here).

One of the reasons I love joining Letterboxd challenges is that they sometimes get me to discover films I otherwise never would have come across. Like this dystopian stop-motion bit of madness I watched for the Chinese animation entry of the Asian Cinema Challenge.

Had the pleasure today of revisiting Society with someone who was going into the film blind. Love getting to watch my friends be delighted by batshit movies.

Had a double hitter of emotional graphic novels recently. @boum.bsky.social's beautiful story of a girl dealing with vision loss made me tear up. And Ram V and Filipe Andrade's lush story of a demon's culinary ambitions made me hungry. Some best reads here.

Just watched Sumala, a very welcome new discovery of Indonesian horror. Put Makayla Rose Hilli in all the films. She's got a filmography that includes Joko Anwar and Timo Tjahanto, plays the lead monster here with a nasty glee, and she's only 12?! This kid rules.

The only way I could see this without paying $75 for an eBay copy was renting it through my Netflix DVD subscription. When they shut down and let us keep our last rented film, I made sure this was the one I got. I'm so excited this is finally getting a boutique release.

If you listen to enough @colorsofthedark.bsky.social and @purecinemapod.bsky.social, you can sense that this film is uniquely @elrickane.bsky.social, as the film gives a sense of his cinematic appreciations without feeling derivative. A great vibes slow burn, glad I got to see it on a big screen.

Just finished The Deviant by @jamesthefourth.bsky.social and Joshua Hixson. Thought it was a one-shot so I mentally went "noo" at the cliffhanger and then saw this volume only came out last October so it's gonna be awhile before I get to read vol 2. Love when a comic gets me that excited for more.

Even though I gave the films different ratings and liked Flow the most, the animation Oscar nominations are the one category where any nominee could win and I'd be like, "Awesome!"

You ever have a book you want to devour, but which also stresses you out so much you need to take breaks between chapters? This is one of those books. Really digging it so far.

Umbrella putting out a killer month of releases. I've wanted Shutter and The Fall forever and some of that Thai box set has been sitting in my watchlist for years waiting for an accessible release.

I like the idea of changing letterboxd faves in memory of a departed artist. Here's mine. Even if he wasn't one of my all time faves, I found his work fascinating and loved the existence of him and his art in our world. Just gutted.

It's been awhile since I read a full length novel in just a few days. This one is lean, mean and satisfying. Highly recommend The Eyes are the Best Part by Monika Kim. Another discovery I can thank @colorsofthedark.bsky.social for.

Couldn't decide on a last movie for New Year's Eve so I finally finished up Cabinet of Curiosities. Been saving Panos Cosmatos's episode for a special occasion. Goddamn we're so overdue for a new feature.

Saw 71 films in the theater. Some experiences were awful, but some were memorable and remind me why going to the movies is still one of my favorite things to do. Among my fave experiences...

I'm not a huge anime watcher these days but this new release on Netflix is worth seeing for the art style alone. A million little details in every scene, just a visual feast. Only came on my radar doing a random letterboxd search!

Just learned another favorite internet cat passed away recently. RIP Harpo, he of the many fetch quests.
